What Are The Rules for Midlife Dating?
Rules, rules and more rules. It’s no wonder that dating is so damned confusing. And to make matters worse, there are so many conflicting rules. If the last time that you dated was a decade ago, (or longer) it can feel pretty overwhelming because back when we were younger, we really didn’t think about what the rules of dating were supposed to be.
So, just what are some of these so-called rules for midlife dating?
Confidence is sexy. Have a little mystery. Be available. Don’t be too available. Wait for a commitment to have sex. Love yourself. Have standards. Don’t be too picky. Have your act together.
How do you make sense of all these rules?
My own bottom line is really pretty simple. Be aware of your own behavior. Take personal responsibility for your choices. Be your authentic self. And if you’re looking for perfection, stop.
Think of dating as the process of meeting new people and making new friends. It should be about having FUN, being YOURSELF and PRACTICING communication skills.
*If a person shows up and they don’t look anything like their picture, so what? Make the best of it.
*If a person is talking too much about themselves, give them the benefit of the doubt (chances are they’re nervous or want to impress you).
*If a person doesn’t call you back for a second date, it just meant you weren’t a fit (there’s no need to call them a jerk).
*If you’ve been hurt in the past, there’s no need to continue to live in that space. Everybody is not out to hurt you.
*If you believe in divine destiny, you meet everyone for a reason. Therefore, the more people you see, the bigger the blessing and the better your journey.
Just be yourself
Ultimately, to have positive dating experiences we must learn to be our authentic selves and enjoy life. At the same time, and we also must value those qualities in other people. If someone likes us for who we are, that’s great! And if not, that’s okay too. It’s another step in your journey; just keep moving forward.

when you are both widowed and in your 60’s how do you do the dating scene? We knew each other in school but never dated each other, where do you start at our age?
Terri says
you start at the beginning! I’m not sure I get your question. Has either of you asked the other out? If not, DO IT. And go from there.
