Emotional Intimacy: A Comprehensive Guide for Connecting with the Power of Your Emotions Paperback – August 1, 2013
Purchase options and add-ons
Emotions link our feelings, thoughts, and conditioning at multiple levels, but they may remain a largely untapped source of strength, freedom, and connection. The capacity to be intimate with all our emotions, teaches Robert Augustus Masters, is essential for creating fulfilling relationships and living with awareness, love, and integrity. With Emotional Intimacy, this respected therapist and author invites us to explore:
How to deepen our emotional literacy and become intimate with all our emotions
• The nature of emotional disconnection and what to do about it
• How to identify our emotions, fully experience them, and skillfully express them
• Illuminating, resolving, and healing old emotional wounds
• Gender differences in emotional intimacy and expression
• Steps for bringing greater emotional intimacy and depth into our relationships
• In-depth guidance for those facing depression, anxiety, and shame
• Why "blowing off steam" may make us feel worse, and the nature of healthy catharsis
• The difference between anger and aggression, shame and guilt, jealousy and envy
• Individual chapters for fully engaging with fear, anger, joy, jealousy, shame, grief, guilt, awe, and the full spectrum of our emotions
There are no negative or unwholesome emotions―only negative or harmful things we do with them. Through real life examples, exercises, and an abundance of key insights, Masters provides a lucid guide for reclaiming our emotions, relating to them skillfully, and turning them into allies―to enrich and deepen our lives.

Review
“Understanding our emotions and working with them and through them has never been more important. Personally, relationally, globally, the maturing of emotion is the first step toward peace. In Emotional Intimacy, Robert Masters creates a thorough geography of the heart, offering detailed understandings and extensive ways to practice being human. A true resource for individuals and those in the helping professions.” ―Mark Nepo, author of Seven Thousand Ways To Listen and The Book of Awakening
“There is wisdom and power in this remarkable exploration of emotional intimacy. The author journeys into unexpected regions of the human heart and with rare discernment explores the dark and light of that which allows for a new order of coming together.” ―Jean Houston, PhD, author of The Search for the Beloved
“From the moment I opened Emotional Intimacy and treated myself to a long look at - better to say "drink of" -its contents, something in my heart and whole being relaxed and released. I knew I was in the presence of one of the most precise analyses and deeply comforting (which means, strength-giving) contemplations of human emotion ever written, any time, anywhere, by anyone. Over half a million books are now published every year. Very few deserve reading by many of us. Hardly any should be read, imbibed, deeply absorbed and used by just about every adult and most teenagers on the planet. This is one of them. I'm a fairly well respected teacher of such things myself, and I'm marveling at it. I intend to go to school in this masterwork by Robert Augustus Masters for a very long time to come. I can hardly praise it, and thank Robert, enough.” ―Saniel Bonder, co-founder, Waking Down, and author of Ultimaya 1.0: The Trouble with the Wishes of Leopold Stokes
“Emotional Intimacy is a godsend. Open it on any page and you will experience the truth within your emotions. I recommend this wonderful book to everyone!” ―Christiane Northrup, MD, author of the New York Times bestsellers Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom and The Wisdom of Menopause
“This is one of the best books on human emotion I've read. What I particularly like about it is its practicality. Dr. Masters has obviously done his fair share of work on his own relationships; his insights and suggestions show the signs of one who has been there in the heat of action.” ―Gay Hendricks, PhD, author of The Big Leap and co-author of Conscious Loving with Dr. Kathlyn Hendricks
“Emotional Intimacy sets out a perfectly clear and accurate map of the all-too-often confused dimension of our emotional territory, and the result is everything you could ever want from a book on this topic: it is concise, useful, beautifully succinct, exquisitely well-executed, and a deeply joyful book to read. I highly recommend this book for professional and laypeople alike―it has something deeply important to offer each―and you won’t regret it!” ―Ken Wilber, Integral philosopher and author of A Brief History of Everything
“This remarkably helpful, lucidly written book provides an exceptional road map on how to work creatively and constructively with all of our emotions. I was particularly impressed by Masters' emphasis on intimacy throughout the book, including the art of developing intimacy with each of our emotions. For those of us who wish to deepen our capacity for emotional intimacy with another human being, Masters' offering is a beautiful place to begin.” ―Katherine Woodward Thomas, author of Calling in “The One”
“In Emotional Intimacy, Robert Masters offers a primer on emotions―from the most primary to the most subtle. Whether you are currently in a relationship or wish to be in one, this is a very worthwhile book to pick up and select a chapter from which to taste, digest, transform, and heal. As a couples’ therapist, I will definitely recommend this book to my clients.” ―Stan Tatkin, PsyD, MFT, author of Wired for Love

- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2013I devour books, but my husband does not. I can never manage to convince him to read any of the books I love, so I've stopped trying. As I read this guide, I found the information to be incredibly applicable to my own life (and saw ways in which my family could likely benefit by making a few small changes). This book was written in such a way that I was able to summarize its advice to my husband, and, honestly, within quite a short time, we have noticed changes in the general atmosphere of our home. No, it didn't get my husband to start reading books...I don't think there's a book that will ever do that. But it did get me to understand that nagging him isn't going to make him start reading the books I wish he'd read, and that it's more important for me to try to understand his perspective than to try to force mine onto him. Amazingly, he and I have been getting along much better, and I know our three-year-old daughter has picked up on the decreased tension in the household, because she seems much more relaxed.
I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about him or herself or about emotional intelligence, or who gets into frequent arguments/has relationship issues. It provides an excellent outlook and interesting information on human emotions, surprisingly simple suggestions on how to learn more about oneself, emotionally and how to connect with others (and not cheesy or too touchy-feely, either... neither my husband nor I was raised in an emotionally open family, and this book did not offer suggestions that were too far fetched for us to attempt).
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2015A clear, concise and helpful way to understand how to work with various emotions so that you are able to integrate them in a healthy way into your life. Written by an author who has another book on Spiritual Bypass, this book helps you understand that only by understanding why various emotional states are there and working through them instead of denying them can you live a truly happy life.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2020Others have stated what needs to be said about this gem much better than I can. It's very engaging and an excellent work you can turn back to and work with for many years for sustained development/intimacy with your emotions.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2013I like some of the information about human emotions. This is quite a scholarly book and seems more like a dissertation than a book to enjoy reading. Helpful in many ways, though, especially when it comes to jealousy.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2024I have learned more about intimacy from this book than I've learned from all previous books combined.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2020What a book. Not to be read quickly, and surely a book I’ll be referencing for possibly the rest of my life. Emotional work is grounding. Masters is brilliant.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2022Hard to read. Parts I didn’t relate to.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2014This was my first introduction to Robert Augustus Masters' work. I am intrigued enough to want to know more about his trainings. I bought some of his other books, which are good but this one is a truly valuable resource on emotions for those wishing to be more conscious and/or bring emotional intelligence into their work and into client work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have book if human
The book is amazing. It explains about the primal emotions, what is a healthy and are distorted expressions of it, and exercises to familiarize and move through them. Just so well written. I wish I wasn’t in my fourties’ - this should be a high school must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Work of art
Happiness is our natural state when we are no longer at war with ourselves, are no longer striving to keep our suffering in shadows, and are actively cultivating intimacy with all that we are.- chapter Joy ( The Unbound Feeling of Being)
And how would one create intimacy without fully being aware of the emotions inside. The emotions allow us to connect deeper and live a fulfilling life.
This book will help you do that.
It's a work of art. When I was reading about grief, guilt, joy... It felt like I was immersed in a work of art.
Quoting from the book-
The expression on face which can identify disgust- Crinkling of the nose and lifting of the upper lip.
Haughtiness is little more than dressed up disgust, reinforced with a shot of pride..... The classic stiff upper lip....
